When I was first asked what marketing was I thought it was something simple as the advertising of a product or service that a company wanted to get out to the public eye. However marketing is more than that. Marketing is knowing who to target, what the customers want and need, and how to make it appealing to the targeted audience. It is also important to have marketing in your company and it will make your company more successful in the long run. I will explain why in a little bit.
First let’s go over what marketing is and look as a couple definitions. I already told I thought marketing was about advertising a product or service. After learning a little bit from the readings I have found out marketing is more than that and it is also about knowing what audience to target. It is also about knowing what the customer’s wants and needs are. Perreault, Cannon, and McCarthy define marketing as “the performance of activities that seek to accomplish an organization’s objectives by anticipating customer or client needs and directing a flow of need-satisfying goods and services from producer to customer or client”(Perreault, Cannon, & McCarthy, 2011). Kotler and Keller also defined marketing as “identifying and meeting human and social needs”(Kotler & Keller, 2012). Kotler and Keller also mention that one of best short definitions of marketing is “meeting needs profitably”(Kotler & Keller, 2012).
I believe both of those definitions from Basics marketing and Marketing management are good definitions and explain what marketing is really about. These definitions also start to explain the importance of marketing in the organizational success. Kind of like the definition “meeting needs profitably”(Kotler & Keller, 2012) that Kotler and Keller wrote. If you use marketing effectively you will be making a profit and being successful.
