For my observations I did 3 different types of observations. I did a checklist, a flowchart and a snapshot. Checklists are good because they contain a lot of information when it comes to an observation. It means you can see exactly where the child is at within milestones and show development steps and it also isn’t too time consuming and you can participate in it which helps to get clearer and better evidence. There is also a wide range and variety of milestones to choose from to see what the child is working towards and you have specific things to look for. Also you may even learn new things about the child such as likes, dislikes and interests that you didn’t know about before and also may see things that the child lacks development in that you didn’t see before such as eating and using a fork and spoon. The only disadvantage about a checklist is that sometimes you don’t see the evidence within the observation when you know that the child can do it because you have seen evidence before of the child doing it and you still can’t put into your observation that the child can do it because that would be being subjective.
Flowcharts for an observation are good to how children with others or to if they interact at all. You can also use flowcharts to compare to social and emotional development. There a few disadvantages of flowcharts though, these being that flowcharts can be quite time consuming and they are also non participant. Also another disadvantage is that on the day of the observation the child may be not feeling well, or the activities set out may be something that the child is not interested therefore that can impact the observation showing different results to wait you may see on a different day which can make a flow chart not reliable or valid and to overcome this you would have to carry out the observation several times in a for example one term and this applies to other observations also.
