Some have claimed that Thucydides is making empirical claims, whereas Plato is making normative claims.   This paper would briefly address Thucydides versus Plato on the nature of the Good Life. In the next few paragraphs, I would like to examine the truth on the basis that Thucydides made empirical claims, and how Plato made normative claims. Thucydides and Plato had opposite beliefs in their approach on the good life.   Thucydides empirical claims and the dismissal of “right” and” justice” is best noted through one of his famous writings the “The Peloponnesian War” and Plato’s normative claims is best noted in his writing “The Republic.”

If Thucydides lived during contemporary times, he would have probably been responsible for the famous saying “only the strong survive.” Thucydides empirical claims, is clearly and best supported by his displays of empirical thinking in his studies of human nature and behavior during “The Peloponnesian War”. An excerpt from “The Peloponnesian War” dialogue between the Melians and Atenians is a strong indication of imperialism, where Thucydides makes axiomatic statements one after another, in regards to power. “Melians: So you would not agree to our being neutral, friends instead of enemies, but allies of neither side? Athenians: No, because it is not so much your hostility that injures us; it is rather the case that, if we were on friendly terms with you, our subjects would regard that as a sign of weakness in us, whereas your hatred is evidence of our power.” (excerpt from the poly war, Ethics in America page 2, Lisa H Newton).   Thucydides introduces a realism theory. The realism power revolves around the relationship between capital, military might, and strength.
