One of the ten most popular websites on the internet and one of the three most popular social networking sites (including Facebook and LinkedIn), Twitter is a microblogging website which allows users to post and read online messages that 140 characters or less. Users can use Twitter via Short Messaging Service on their cellular phones, mobile device application or from their computers (Twitter, 2013). Created in 2006, Twitter has now being described as ‘the SMS of the Internet’ (D'Monte, 2009). Twitter has grown over the years with almost 200 million registered users who post an average of 400 million tweets on a daily basis. Almost 60% of these tweets are posted from mobile devices (Moore, 2013). With such huge amounts of content being posted to its servers on a daily basis, the technological infrastructure required to maintain this data is highly complex and demanding. This paper aims address the positive and negative impact on its users and to provide recommendations for improving and enhancing the information system. Positive Impacts on Users
Over the past few years, twitter has been used as a platform for launching protests against oppression and injustice. These protests are also called 'twitter revolutions'. A real example of such a revolution was the Arab Spring and the events that transpired in Egypt where it was used as a mass communication weapon. Twitter can easily be used to get the latest news with real updates from real people who are in the center of the events being followed. Be it politicians, athletes, celebrities or any person of interest. Twitter has also been used in emergencies such as natural disasters to provide the most up-to-date news updates.
