Social and economic inequalities have been visible in the UK for hundreds of years and still continue to exist today. Although there are still huge social and economic inequalities governments have took measures to reduce social problems such as smoking and economic problems such as unemployment. However depending on what social class you are in it will still depend on how likely you are to either smoke or be unemployed.
Smoking is a crucial factor in the ill health of people who live in deprived areas. Smoking is very much a class issue, and effects people who live in the routine and manual socio-economic classification more than any other. 26% of all adults in the routine and manual socio-economic classification smoke compared 15% of all adults in the managerial and professional classification. This shows a distinct difference in the number of adults smoking depending on what classification they are in. In 1960 there were no significant differences in the smoking habits of all social classes in the UK. However, by the 1990s the professional classes had listened to the health advice and the number of smokers in that social class had fallen by 75%. In contrast, the number of smokers in social class V (class of unskilled occupations) had dropped by only 30%. This clearly indicates that smoking is an issue liked to social class and poverty. Other figures show that in 2008, 48% of adults in deprived areas of Scotland were smokers, a higher proportion than in deprived areas of England and Wales where the figure was only 41%. This shows how geographical location which is linked into social class can affect weather you are more likely to smoke or not. Showing that there are still social inequalities within the UK.
Due to the amount of people smoking it was hoped that the smoking ban in enclosed public places (pubs, restaurants and other public places) introduced in Scotland on the 26th of March 2006 would dramatically reduce health inequalities in Scotland. England...
