Compare and contrast Buchanan and Monderman’s approaches to the production of social order in public spaces.

Social order refers to a set of linked social structure, social institutions and social practice which converse, maintain and enforce “normal “ways of relating and behaving. The word norm is used in this essay to mean a shared set of values or expectations about how people will or should behave. There is a general expectation and deeper ideas reinforcing these expectations. It is important to understand at this point that human behaviour is not now as it once was and again will not be as in the future as it is constantly being remade. I am going to view the similarities and differences of both views from sociologist and social philosopher Michel Foucault who centres more on the abstract conception of the power of knowledge and discourses in ordering social life. I will also discuss the impact on two strategies made regarding managing relationships between individuals and vehicles in the street. These views will help to show how social order is provided in public space.

Goffman looked at social order from the micro-level; he very much believed that the way people behaved, their actions and interactions produced social order and his theory was called International order”. He completed many studies which were centred on functions of rituals and order in everyday life. He could see that people tended to come together in different ways and as such social change happens. In the late 50’s and early 80’s he completed studies which showed him how people behaved in a courteous and respectful manners showing they were capable and committed to the customer but once in the kitchen relaxed and became more intolerant of customers Goffman (1959,1971 and 1972)(p.317).
