Relationships are only consequential casualties of an apocalyptic world to people who hold them in high regard. This is evident in the novel Things We Didn’t See Coming by Steven Amsterdam which depicts the story of a man’s struggle through strange and horrific terrain as he goes about the no longer simple act of survival in a post-apocalyptic world.   In a world where survival is a daily struggle some people strayed away from the constraints and complications that came from maintaining relationships not viewing them as a necessary and as such not viewing them as causality. This is not however the case for all characters in the text some fought to maintain their relationships even if they knew the struggles that it would bring.
Those that feel they do not require relationships in their lives do not viewed them as any great sacrifice in order to survive in a world riddled with hardships.
