The UK has a uniquely variable climate due to the location at the edge of a continent, between two seas and it is subject to the influences of five major air masses. On average in 2013 the UK’s mean temperature 5.7 °C and overall we received 154% of average rainfall. The UK’s climate is described as cool temperate western maritime, which means the UK temperature is normally mild, we often get rain and it can get quite windy.
One of the most common features of UK’s climate is an anticyclone which can happen in summer and winter. An anticyclone is a large mass of subsiding air, which causes high pressure at the surface. Anticyclone are very stable systems. They may persist for many days. They are then called blocking anti-cyclones as they block out any depressions. In the summer time the temperature is extremely hot and there are very high pressures, for example one of the highest day time temperature recorded in UK was 23⁰C and in the night it was 15⁰C. Due to these high temperatures is can cause droughts to occur in the UK. Another problem with extreme high temperatures in people health a lot of people can experience heat stroke and babies and older people will suffer in the heat and it can cause a huge strain on the UK’s health care. In contrast in the winter the weather condition can get extremely cold with many days frosts and freezing temperatures such as the winter of 1982 which recorded a record breaking -27.2⁰C in the early morning in Scotland. These frosts and freezing temperature are caused by the lack of cloud cover, winds and a moisture in the air due the high pressure weather system in the middle of the British isles cause the anti-cyclone Another hazard caused by winter anti-cyclones is winter fogs and radiation fogs which forms when there has been a clear night and the ground surface temperature are at freezing and this cooling extends above the ground surface and is encouraged by light winds that allow slight mixing of the air.
