The Quest for Truth
There are many intelligent, well renowned authors of literature who have had a significant impact on the desire to read literature for many generations. Two of the most famous readings are “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “Soldiers Home” by Ernest Hemingway. Each of these works of literature reflects a spiritual, personal and social conflict within its main characters, Goodman Brown in “Young Goodman Brown” and Harold Krebs in “Soldier’s Home”. Home sweet home is a saying that has been versed for many years. “There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort” (Austin).   Home is a place of comfort and rest. It could also be considered our final resting place and sanctuary. Home is a place where good times, fond memories and laughs are created. For Goodman Brown and Harold Krebs, a new knowledge and interaction with home brings spiritual, personal, and social conflicts.
Goodman Brown is a Puritan, who is committed to his liturgical faith. Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the classic literary story of “Young Goodman Brown” to share a common truth; people must have faith in themselves in God and in their family. Having faith gives the opportunity to have a productive, successful life. Goodman Brown has an inner struggle between good and evil when he discovers the truth about some of the people in Salem Village.   He decides to embark on a journey at dusk into the dark, dense forest, his wife, asks him not to go by saying “Prithee put off your journey until sunrise and sleep in your own bed tonight…. Pray tarry with me this night, dear husband, of all nights in the year” (Hawthorne 402).The perception of this profound statement is that Goodman Brown is listening to his young wife. However, he is actually conversing with his Puritan faith. He leaves his faith and clings towards darkness and evil. He thinks of Faith, “Well, she is a blessed angel on earth: and after this one night I’ll cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven”...
