What is your opinion about why we need posters, and what is a poster? Posters are simply pieces of paper which are designed to attract attention. They are used for many purposes, such as to introduce a product, to announce some important event, to sell one thing or to convey a feeling. At first, in the United States poster was used by circuses to advertise their shows. They sent them ahead of the show by rail to promote the performance (Edwards 13). Even today posters are a significant way to announce a movie, to increase the popularity of a movie, and to attract audiences. An impactful poster can convey the feeling of what the movie wants to show. The movie poster “The Pursuit of Happyness” uses content, color and composition excellently in order to successfully advertise the movie.
First of all, the content of this poster includes many different elements, such as image and text. First is the image. Edwards stated that the first poster to combine drawings and photographs was Piper’s Pink String and Sealing Wax, which includes a drawing of a Victorian street in Brighton and a photograph of Googie Withers as murderess Pearl Bond (108). In this poster, the designer uses a photograph of the two main characters to show content. The viewer can see two people, one adult and one child. The man stands there with a briefcase and looks at the little boy warmly, and at the same time, the little boy appears to be laughing loudly and cheerfully with his schoolbag while holding his favorite toy, Captain America. The two people are probably on their way to work and school, and there is a beautiful sunshine illuminating their hands. From this, the audience can come to realize the relationship is father and son and their love for each other is evident through their happy smiles on their faces as they look at each other.
