Condensation slides its way down the window, leaving behind it a ribbon of smooth, murky darkness. The sheer suffocating heat and humidity inside suggested the number of drenched bodies seeking refuge from the relentless onslaught of rain. Meanwhile the corridor was empty, waiting patiently to be filled by the disobedient herd. As the papers danced across the floors, the wind beyond the doors howled fiercely as it waited to be let in. Not much time left whispered the door as it collided into the wall, bracing for battle. Moments later the clock struck 12…

The bell shrieked, signalling to the herd that it’s feeding time. Promptly they spill out of their cages and race towards the hall entrances like a predator charging at its prey, taking amongst them everything in their path like an avalanche. In no time the uniformed bodies transform into a stream. In one corner, a single teacher lost a battle to restrain a group of shouting children and was swamped in wave of uniformed bodies. Buzzing with anticipation, their instincts triggered by the promise of food, the mass of children prolonged to charge past him into the canteen.

Dragging back a small measure of control, he finally managed to stem the flow and continues to thin out the crowd at a steady pace, with many jealous glances towards the table where several of his fellow teachers lounge, indulging a few sweet, children-free minutes. Moments later the queue reached the counter. Immediately the children began to filter past the food canteen like water passing through a funnel.   Meanwhile as the room filled dinner ladies become aloof whilst the shouts, yells and vague discussion coming from the hoard of tatty teenagers ascend to a pitch and volume that could shame a football. Wanting to live up to their reputation, the children continued their barrage of sound, undeterred by the half-hearted efforts of their teachers.
