The Hold

Guilt is one of the most powerful emotions within a man’s consciousness, it can change the course of a man’s outlook and behaviour for life. In the two following short stories we the cause and effects of guilt.“The Black Cat” and “The Tell Tale Heart” are two short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe. Although they are two separate stories, they share a likeness between the theme and plot. The shared theme in both stories is: Guilt will always make itself evident in time. In both stories, the two narrator experience guilt for their previous actions. The narrator from “The Black Cat” is so enveloped in his guilt after hanging his beloved cat, Pluto off a tree. Upon finding a second cat sharing the same likeness as, Pluto except, for a white patch on its fur. The narrator recounts that, “It was now the representation of an object that I shudder to name -- and for this, above all, I loathed, and dreaded, and would have rid myself of the monster had I dared -- it was now, I say, the image of a hideous -- of a ghastly thing -- of the GALLOWS ! -- oh, mournful and terrible engine of Horror and of Crime -- of Agony and of Death !” while exploring the boundaries between the real and supernatural, it is possible that the plot twist derives from the narrator’s insanity. But, evidently the narrator is being confronted by his suppressed guilt. On another occasion in attempts to kill the second cat, the narrator’s wife intrudes. Angered by this intrusion the narrator kills his wife. In the process of concealing the body, he takes use of the wet walls in the basement and entombs her body in the walls. The cat disappears. Days later, policemen show up in request of a search. The narrator confidently guides them throughout the house and even to the very spot where his wife is entombed. Making a remark about the fine craftsmanship of the house the narrator knocks the wall, (where the wife’s body is behind) from behind the wall comes a loud shriek. The policeman uncover...
