The short story is about the main character Tommy Grimes and him becoming a man. The most important person we here about otherwise is Tommy’s father Tom Grimes also called Pa.
The story begins with the main character Tommy lying on the ground in a forest having a flashback. It is nearly a year ago and Tommy is eleven years old. Tommy is with his father in the hen-yard to shoot a weasel. Tommy fails to shoot the weasel because he is too scared to kill. Afterwards he has to go into the yard and see all the killing the weasel has done. He truly remembers his father getting mad at him and how disappointed he looked in his eyes. His father wants Tommy to be good – to be able to be like him and the other men in the community.
So, from that day forward he began to practice and he became very good with the rifle. The father was teaching him how to hunt and track down animals. He also learn him about the lovely things about nature and the necessarily thing about killing.
The father is telling Tommy that is a fact that a man dies a little when he kills something – but it is just something that has to be done.
So, in the end of the story the father takes Tommy out hurting and Tommy is ending up shooting on a target. First he thought that he has been shooting his father and gets very nervous and afraid. It turns out that he had shot a black slave.
So by using his skills his fathers is so very proud of him and he is now declared a true grown up man.
