According to Merriam-Webster.com “Carbon cycle: The cycle of carbon in the earth’s ecosystems in which carbon dioxide is fixed by photo synthetic organisms to form organic nutrients and is ultimately restored to the inorganic state (as by respiration, protoplasmic decay, or combustion).” The carbon cycle starts with the reservoir of carbon dioxide in the air. It also becomes organic molecules in organisms. The carbon also is respired by plants and animals into the air or is deposited in soil. Some of the processes are significant in transferring carbon. The fossilization of the dead plants and animals into coal. Then it removes the carbon from the atmosphere. A carbon atom cycles about every six years. The human impact for carbon cycle is that the human intrusion of the cycle is significant. 40% of the photosynthetic productivity of land plants to support human enterprise. By the burning of fossil fuels, we have increased atmospheric carbon dioxide by 35%. There are four major human impacts for the carbon cycle. The first one is burning of fossil fuels. It’s when oil or coal are burned to the carbon and released into the atmosphere at a faster rate than it is removed. We need the natural gas, oil and coal for fossil fuels that are commonly burned to generate electricity in power plants, for transportation, in homes and in other industrial complexes. The second is carbon sequestration. According to eHow.com “When plants remove carbon dioxide from the air and store it, the process is called carbon sequestration.” This means that the permanent removal of trees from forests. The permanent removal of trees means new trees will not replanted. The fourth one is Geologic sequestration. According to eHow.com “Human activity can affect the carbon cycle by capturing carbon dioxide and storing it underground rather than permitting it to be released into the atmosphere. This process is called geologic sequestration.”
