In the short story Where are you going? Where have you been?   by Joyce Carol, the theme that one must make a sacrifice and become responsible for getting involved in a problem is conveyed through Connie. She is the protagonist of the story, she doesn’t get along with her mother or sister, and she neglects them in order to live another life. Throughout the story Connie works hard to present the appearance of a mature woman who is experienced, this is the problem she gets into pretending to be something she is not.   Throughout the story she has two different personas which can be distinguished the childlike innocent one used around the house and family, and the adult like one which was used on evenings out, she attempts to act adult like through her hairstyles, clothing and behavior. She does this to grab the attention from older boys, she presents herself as if she is ready to enter a state of experience but when the time occurs with Eddie in the alley she is not ready to pursue it. Another aspect of Connie’s “adult” persona is that she is looking for independence which has a brutal outcome. Connie spends the summer avoiding her mother’s prying questions and dreaming about the boys she meets. One day her family go out to a BBQ insist that Connie joins them, though Connie “wasn’t interested, and rolled her eyes, to let them know just what she thought of it ’’.Her family leaves her home independently, and one of the first things Connie does it play music; music helps her escape the real world and enter her own world of romance. At the drive thru restaurant the music played Connie’s “face gleamed with joy” and “shoulders draw up and every breath she sucked in was of full pleasure’’; giving her this same sensation when she is left home alone.
