The role of registered nursing has changed dramatically since the 1970’s, with an increased emphasis of higher educational based knowledge along with a combination of clinical practice skills, whereas in the past nurses lived and trained in hospital based nursing colleges. The transition of registered nurse training to university educational sectors introduced the subject of sociology in the core syllabus structure of nursing. This put forth significant issues that has gathered attention about the worth and value of the subject in the nursing curriculum. This essay will argue that sociology is important to nursing education because it provides nursing students with knowledge and skills to apply to the nursing profession of the patients that are cared for. In this essay I will seek to explore in favour of sociology to the nursing curriculum; why the enhancement of sociological awareness assists nurses in providing quality nursing care and how a holistic approach can provide adequate knowledge if it is utilised properly. This essay will also unravel opposing opinions of sociology to the nursing curriculum of the irrelevance and problematical nature of the subject and therefore it cannot provide adequate knowledge to nursing students for nursing clinical practice. Evidence will show that the value of sociology is an important part of the nursing curriculum through demonstrating the benefits which far out way opposing claims.  

One of the explanations for sociology being part of the educational nursing program, are the valuable benefits of sociological awareness. According to Cooke (1993), a common explanation for sociology in nursing education, is that it increases awareness of sociological needs and facilitates to the holistic care of patients and families by taking into account social factors of the individual rather than just the physical symptoms.
