Sociology is the study of society and how it works. It also studies our social behaviors, especially of the origins, organization and development of human society. Sociology can help us understand ourselves better, since it studies how social world influences the way we think, feel and act.
There are many social issues around the world. Some issues may not be considered social problems in the US or other developed country but those are pretty serious issues for developing countries. For example, in Bangladesh poverty is a big issue. Poverty matters very much because it affects every factors of growth in a country. Government and other organizations are trying to fight it but couldn’t get any success because of their other social issues like illiteracy, fast growing population rate, unemployment, political problems, low social status of women and etc. It’s hard to address one without addressing all of them but now people are more concern about their social issues and taking steps to solve them than before.
In the US, some social issues are teen pregnancy, domestic violence, divorce, unemployment, malnutrition and so on. Society should address them and they are giving their attention to these problems by making people aware with TV shows, Ads, teaching the cause and effect of issues in school, posters and building different social organizations for spreading awareness.
The purpose of this course is to make us understand the perspective of our society, culture, social organization and social change. At the end of the semester I think I’ll become more socially aware of the world and social issues in everyday life. I’ll be able to know how sociologist can critically think about social issues and conduct research. Overall this course will give me a clear idea of human diversity and the challenges we face in this diverse world.
