Introduction- In the year 1946 the first milk union was established . This union started with 250 liters of milk per day. In the year 1955 Amul as a company was established . In the year 1946 the union was called to be known as Kaira District Co-oerpative Milk Producer's Union. This group of people or Union selected its brand name 'Amul' in the year 1995. Dr Verghese Kurien , founder Chairman of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) for more than 30 years. The Brand name Amul means 'Amulya' . The word Amulya is derived from sanskrit word Amulya which mean 'Priceless' . A person from the quality control department in anand suggested the brand name 'Amul'. Amul products are used in many countries apart from India.
It is now also supplied in countries like USA, Australia , UK and Canada. In India millions of people use Amul products since 1946. Its brand name is managed by an apex co-operative organisation , Gujrat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation ltd ( GCMMF) which today is jointly owned by appoxmimately 2.8 million milk producer in Gujrat , India.
Amul pattern has established itself as a uniquely appropriate model for rural development . Amul has spurred the white revolution of India , which has made India the largest producer of Milk and Mialk products accross the world. Amul is the largest food brand of India and world's largest pouched milk brand with annual turnover of US 3.2 billion (19100 Crore) in 2012-2013 ( Times of India). Amul has managed to achieve an unprecedented growth of 20 Percent in milk procurement during the year 2012-13 , setting a new record .
