Same Sex Marriage
Same sex marriage should be legal, because America is moving to a more modern outlook, it is not a question of why anymore, it is a question of when. It has been argued for a long time now and the movement is only getting stronger with the support of government officials such as our president Barack Obama, and thousands of American citizens. In an article titled Obama announces he supports same-sex marriage by Phil Gast, “Obama once opposed such marriages. He later indicated his views were "evolving.".” This article indicates that Obama is seeing this issue in a more modern perspective.
Most people say that if same-sex marriage is legal, it would ruin the image of a traditional American couple and take religion out of marriage, which is a union before God. This is not true, most marriages end in divorce now, and most parents are single and raising a kid on their own. In an article titled 5 Myths about gay marriage by Jonathan Rauch he states “The great enemy of the traditional family in the United States today is not the desire of gay couples to get married; it is the failure of heterosexual couples to get married and stay married.” How is it fair to same-sex couples to be denied marriage rights when heterosexual couples take it for granted everyday?
With more people supporting same-sex marriage it is getting close to impossible to not know a gay person, In the article Why Gay Marriage is Inevitable by Michael Klarman, it says “The number of Americans reporting that they know somebody who is openly gay tripled between 1985 and 2000, reaching 75%. One study in 2004 found that among those who reported knowing someone who is gay, 65% favored either gay marriage or civil unions”. More people are being open to supporting same-sex marriage, and being open to supporting it, it is impossible to avoid this issue.
