Research papers usually have five chapters with well-established sections in each chapter. Readers of the paper will be looking for these chapters and sections so you should not deviate from the standard format unless you are specifically requested to do so by the research sponsor.
An abstract is a brief summary (50 – 200 words) of the most important and interesting research findings of a study. In addition, abstract usually contain some mention of key methodological features of the study and relevant implications of the major findings.
An abstract are always found in the beginning of a research, but given their content, they cannot be created until after the report has been written. The major function of an abstract is to provide potential readers with sufficient information both to interest them and to help them determine whether to read the complete article. Often, researchers scan collections of abstracts in order to identify potentially useful elements for their own literature reviews. It is therefore critical that an abstract be both concise and precise.
An abstract is a concise single paragraph summary of completed work or work in progress. In a minute or less a reader can learn the rationale behind the study, general approach to the problem, pertinent results, and important conclusions or new questions.
Writing an abstract
Write your summary after the rest of the paper is completed. After all, how can you summarize something that is not yet written?
