Orientation Attachments in Stressful and Sexual Adversity Associated with Romantic Relationships in Late Adolescents

Research has proven that stressors and stress related problems are negatively correlated with sexual activity for couples. Research has also shown that early attachment orientations, if negative, can have lasting influences on future relationships. Individual differences in the attachment process can predict different affective-cognitive responses during disputes. (Creasy and Hesson-McInnis, 2001). In university counseling centers romantic problems are a common complaint. Couples will try to find resolution when inevitable conflict arises but negative emotions can trigger negative responses. These negative emotions associated with these disputes may trigger strong stress responses, self-esteem problems, academic difficulties, and violence in these adolescent relationships (Connolly & Konarski, 1994; Clore, Larson, & Wood, 1999). The need for treatment for these individuals is necessary if the treatment specialists can intervene effectively.
If the problems that these disputes are centered around are sexual more issues are raised. This could be an indicator for low relationship satisfaction or marital problems; sexual libido is often linked to low marital quality (Hurlbert, Apt, & Pierce, 2000). Relationship distress has a straight impact on intimacy and closeness that represent important facets of sexuality and have been shown to be influential predictors of relationship satisfaction and stability (Sprecher & Cate, 2004). Sexual desire has been thought to be greatly effected when couples experience individual or simultaneous stress. My hypothesis is that if a couple is experiencing stress and they do not have good coping skills that the stress will lead to a poor quality relationship.
