There is not doubt, that technology through out the years has been an enormous asset, to both society and business. The marketing in the 21-century is all about the trends. One of the new trends is the Quick Response (QR) codes, which now are being now to help save lives in emergency situations. Thru the use of a mobile device, paramedics and other emergency health personnel can access the patient's medical information, by just scanning a QR code: “offering a solution to interoperability and portability”(Thede, & Sewell, 2010). QR (Quick Response) codes are "two-dimensional barcodes that can be scanned by a mobile device camera. The mobile device is then prompted to load a webpage, display text or other data contained in the code" (Hampton, Peach & Rawlins, 2011). The popularity of QR codes is growing rapidly all through out United States and the world and is even helping save lives in emergency situations. They are convenient, rapid and easy to access by simply using a smart phone. However, not everyone accepts the use of these QR codes, because not everyone owns a smart phone. Also, not everyone agrees with having their personal information disseminated to those they may consider strangers and possible having their privacy invaded as the sources being used might not be so secure.
On advantage of using QR codes in an emergency situation might be the easy use access. When a patient has a QR Code, the response team can scan their QR codes, linking them to an online account containing the person’s photo, contact information and emergency contact information. If GPS is enabled on the scanner’s smart phone, the emergency contact will also receive a notification that includes a map link to the location where the QR code was scanned (Jackson, 2011).
