Treatment plan for Michael Jude
Since Michael is an alcohol-dependent patient who abuses alcohol he may need the Aversive plan. Michael is motivated to change but finds it hard to put a plan together and therefore subsequently fails in his attempts to become better person. (Garrison, 2011) states that people with an alcohol disorder may need the aversive plan. This plan may entail that Michaels treating therapist may need to assess the extent of Michael’s problem, including drinking history and where it all began usually at university, prior treatments and response, physical health, and his present drinking pattern. (Garrison, 2011) informs one that “patients who are physically addicted to alcohol and currently drinking may experience severe withdrawal symptoms and may have to undergo detoxification before treatment starts” this means that Michael may need to stop his ways in order to become successful meaning that he may need to be monitored in a rehabilitation centre away from the pressures of the world. When the detoxification is completed and Michael is assessed for aversion therapy the therapist has a crucial decision to make and (Garrison, 2011) states that “its type of noxious stimulus to use, whether electrical stimulation or an emetic a medication that causes vomiting”. Michael is given an electric shock as the aversive stimulus. (Howard,2001) states that “there is some research evidence that chemical aversants lead to at least short-term avoidance of alcohol in some patients,   emetic is "biologically appropriate" for the patient in that it affects him or her in the same organ systems that excessive alcohol use does. The procedure is fully explained to the patient, who gives   informed consent” this means that Michael in the beginning may succeed but one may later find that he may become addicted to alcohol again at a stronger rate.
