Poverty all-over the world; case specifically in South Africa has turned to be every politician’s popular speech on mechanism of how to reduce this notorious catastrophe.   With regard to this paper, I will engage on critical discussion focusing mainly on defining and explaining the concept of poverty, further attempt to discuss the causes of poverty not forgetting the consequences that the general public of South Africa encounters on daily basis.   In engaging on this critical premise, this essay will provide calculable facts and arguments by other experts about the subject.   Additionally contribute with my own thought and assumptions around the subject of poverty in the South African context.
Poverty is a very complex and diverse term, and it has been defined differently either narrowly or broadly.   For this paper; I believe poverty is when the majority of the masses are deprived of birth given right necessities such as running water, employment, food, electricity and more.   However different scholars and prominent leaders of the world have defined and argued around this terminology differently.   One of the scholars understands that, “levels of poverty in South Africa are critically high, despite the country’s status as an upper middle income country” (Frye, 2006: 01).   From this quote one recognizes that regardless of the country’s status in the global politics or governance, poverty still strikes mostly the poor.
In addition, one of the things that confuse people is that poverty is also a multifaceted term, this means that poverty is different according to environment and needs for that particular community.   For example; “about 2.6 million people slipped into poverty in the United State last year,…the number of Americans living below poverty line is, 46.2 million people” (Tavernise, 2011).   In comparison to South African poverty level, “more than 11 million children in South Africa live in poverty line” (Nkosi, 2011).   This shows that the world is facing a...
