Personal Ethics Development Paper
Personal values, morals, character, or beliefs—terms commonly associated with ethics—are not innate in human beings. These attributes are taught by family members, peers, and the community. They are learned and acquired at an early age. An individual’s character is vital in the ethical practices which encompass the morality based on the duty-driven ethical principles.   These principles are based on six pillars of character—trustworthiness, respectfulness, successfulness in accepting responsibilities, fairness, stewardship and compassion—are the core ingredient in one’s ability to succeed in business matters (Josephson Institute, 2014).   Ethical practices certainly impact the ability for success in the business world as well, in that such personal ethical behavior is influential to one’s business ethical behavior, which is ‘‘behavior that is consistent with the principles, norms, and standards of business practice that have been agreed upon by society” (Treviño & Nelson, 2011, p. 19).
Business Dictionary (2014) defines ethics as, “basic concepts and fundamental principles of decent human conduct. It includes study of universal values such as the essential equality of all men and women, human or natural rights, obedience to the law of land, concern for health and safety and, increasingly, also for the natural environment” (para 1). Whether or not one is aware of it, every human being has a set of personal values; often, these values are passed down from parents or guardians, as well as learned from teachers and mentors.
