The use and abuse of drugs has been a problem in the United States for many decades.   Over the years drug trends have increased, decreased then increased again.   This paper will explore past and current drug trends in the United States and will include when the use of illicit drugs may be considered culturally appropriate and will also analyze health and social problems in the United States that occur due to drug abuse and addiction.

Past and Current Trends

According to "Drugabuse.gov" (2012), “in 2011, an estimated 22.5 million Americans aged 12 or older—or 8.7 percent of the population—had used an illicit drug or abused a psychotherapeutic medication (such as a pain reliever, stimulant, or tranquilizer) in the past month” (Illicit Drug Use).   The use of marijuana which is the topic of a heated debate has become a drug that many people believe that it is “okay” to use it because many people believe that it does not do harm to the mind or body, yet makes the user feel tired and lazy.   In actuality, marijuana can impair a person's ability to drive a vehicle, coordination, and judgment ("Abovetheinfluence.com", n.d.).   Most people start using illicit drugs when they are teenagers (sometimes younger children do as well).   It has been said that marijuana has been called a “gate way drug.” A “gate way drug”   is a drug that leads users to trying other drugs (most of the time stronger ones) (Levinthal, C. F. (2012).

When Illicit Drug Use is Culturally Appropriate

There are many different times when illicit drug use has become culturally acceptable and socially acceptable as well.   For example, Shaman who are known as “healers” in the tribe or culture that he or she is a part of and   use hallucinogenic drugs to enter a trance like state in order to diagnose or treat his or her patients (Levinthal,...
