Many of the first twelve colonies made significant contributions to perennial American values. In my opinion, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania made the most significant contributions to perennial American values. Democratic self-government, educational opportunity, religious toleration, social plurality, and economic materialism are some of the areas in which they had significant contributions too, to make them stand out over the other colonies.
The Massachusetts colony made many contributions to perennial American values. The Massachusetts colony contributed to all the perennial American values in one way or another. Massachusetts had various educational opportunities, in 1647 they mandated that every town in Massachusetts of 50 or more families support and elementary school and every town of 100 or more families support a grammar school where boys could learn Latin in preparation for college. The first American colony schools opened in the seventeenth century in Massachusetts. The first public school was even started there. Massachusetts also made significant contributions to democratic self-government. The Massachusetts government was based on systems of governance that had roots in British philosophy. The Massachusetts colony was where the Mayflower Compact was written, which was the first attempt at self-government in the American colonies. Massachusetts colony also had religious tolerance.
