Panera Bread began in 1981 as Au Bon Pain Co., founded by Louis Kan and Ron Shaich. The company prospered along the east coast of the United States and internationally throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1993, Au Bon Pain Co., Inc purchased Saint Louis Bread Company, a chain of 20 bakery-cafes located in the St. Louis area. In 1997 the Saint Louis Bread bakery-cafes were renamed Panera Bread. Panera Bread is one of the United States fastest growing franchise, the restaurant specializes in homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, fresh bakes goods and breads. Panera uses all glass dishes and real silverware; they have cozy couches, a fire place, and also free Wi-Fi for all customer needs. Panera Bread is very customer oriented and when the company realized that Tran’s fats were starting to become a big concern with customers and the medical community they decided to cut them completely out of their menu.
