The zoo is located in the town of Ayer Keroh besides the Lebuh Ayer Keroh at the entrance of Melaka,13 kilometres from Malacca town. it neighbors with the Ayer Keroh crocodile farm, Melaka International Trade Center, Kolej Yayasan Saad, Melaka Manipal Medical College. From the highway, it has a noticeable gate in the Minangkabau design.
Crocodile Park Malacca
Taman Buaya Melaka, also known as the Malacca Crocodile Park, has been in operation since July 1987. Located opposite the famous Zoo Melaka, Taman Buaya Melaka sprawls over 3.5 hectare of reserved forest land and is home to about 100 species of crocodiles and alligators from around the world and they are kept in an atmosphere that is almost equal to their habitat.
The Malacca (Melaka) Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary is located at the right just after the Ayer Keroh Toll Plaza from North South Expressway. Opened to public on 1 February 1991, the Sanctuary is now home to more than 20 species of butterflies. Launched by the Chief Minister of Malacca, the Sanctuary is formerly known only as “The Butterfly Park Malacca” which only houses different species of butterflies. Continuous improvement by the management has led the Malacca Butterfly and Reptile Sanctuary to transform itself into one of the most successful sanctuary in Malaysia today.
HISTORY OF ZOO MALACCA:
Melaka Zoo with an area of 54 acres (21.2 ha) was situated in Ayer Keroh, is a well-known tourism destination in Melaka. The zoo was established in 1963 and originally under the Melaka State Government but its management was taken over by The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) in 1979 and was officially opened to public by the then Prime Minister, Dato Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on 13th August 1987.
