Dreams have always been part of human history. The study of dream is known as oneiromancy. Throughout time the Greeks combined the function of doctors with oneiromancy in their temple dedicated to Asclepius. In this temple people would come to sleep in hopes that in their dream Asclepius would come to them and would tell them how to treat their sickness. As read in “The Book of Divination” he could even replace body parts while they sleep.” Over time it became expensive to go to see an oneiromancer so books were written in representation in what one dreamed about. For example, if a tree was envisioned it would be interpreted as illness. If cheese was envisioned it would be interpreted as cheese.
Sigmund Freud’s Interpretations of Dreams written in 1900, debunked the oneiromancers theory in a way. Freud believed that dreams were our unconscious thoughts and not divine messages as previously believed. Though , they could unlock the mysteries of our psyche; there were two parts, the conscious and the unconscious.   Symbols in people dreams can represent a multitude of things being that they are based on a person’s relationship and perspective to them. On contrary there are also some events and elements that have been consistent across dreamers.
It is rare that a dreamer can come up with an entire new set of symbols. Carl Jung, a Swiss psychologist, breaks these dreams into three types. Type A is the least significant describing that dreams are born in the conscious. Type B, contains material specific to the dreamer but “draws richer realms of the unconscious”. Type C is known as the “grand dream”. It draws entirely from the unconscious and has little to do with the dreamers on life. Very few people encounter Type C dreams. The symbols presented in a Type C dream are believed to be warning or messages about the dreamer’s position in their large journey.
