| Family and Twin Studies:Evidence for the genetic basis of OCD comes from twin studies and evaluations of first degree relatives.   Nastadt et al. (2000) identified 80 patients with OCD and 343 of their first degree relatives and compared them with 73 control patients without mental illness and 300 of their relatives.   There was a strong familial link for the most common form of this disorder.   People with a first degree relative with OCD (parents or siblings) had a five times greater risk of having the illness themselves at some time in their lives compared with the general population.A meta-analysis of 14 twin studies of OCD, including 80 identical and 29 fraternal twin pairs, found that identical twins were on average more than twice as likely to develop OCD if their twin had the disorder than were fraternal twins (Billett et al, 1998).   The COMT gene:The variation in expression of a specific gene may contribute to OCD.   This genetic alteration reduces the production of the enzyme catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), which helps terminate the action of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine.   The researchers collected DNA from samples of 73 people diagnosed with OCD and 148 who had not experienced any mental disorder.   The variation in the COMT gene’s usual sequence, inherited from both parents, occurred in nearly half of the men suffering from OCD, whereas only 1 in 10 women with OCD, and about 1 in 6 of men and women who displayed good mental health, displayed the same genetic trait.   |   One strength of the genetic explanation is that there is further empirical support provided by Rasmussen & Tsuang (1986).   They found a concordance rate of 53-87% in MZ twins for OCD.   This suggests that there is wider academic credibility for the notion that genes play a significant role in the development of OCD. |   One weakness of the genetic explanation is the nature-nurture argument.   It is...
