In this essay I shall be identifying and explaining Mr X’s issues and devising a course of treatment for him. I will also be looking at any ethical issues that may need to be accounted for.
In my assessment of Mr X, he clearly seems to be presenting with self-esteem and self-confidence issues. He also seems to have a great fear of failure and rejection. He has no self-worth and does not view himself as a worthwhile catch. He has a very negative outlook on things, but is very caring. He always seems to be showing consideration to others and putting others before himself.
I believe that his low self-esteem could have been caused by his mother’s critical nature towards him. The ‘picking’ on him that he talks about, could have well dented his confidence and self-esteem, especially if this has been going on since he was a child. I will be looking into this as part of my treatment, as the major cause of poor self-esteem is past negative programming that is the product of judgemental parents. Fear of failure is also an immobilizing emotional condition. It too is product of past negative programming. One fears that they will not be able to accomplish something because one is not worthy of accomplishing it. Further, one tells themselves that if they do happen to succeed at one level, they will have to continue to succeed at higher levels. But each success will only make the inevitable failure harder to bear. Therefore one resolves this problem by telling themselves that “It is better to fail right now and get it over with”. The anticipation of continued success would be much too hard to cope with. Thus, fear of success is actually the same as fear of failure. It is a condition that impedes personal progress. Finally...
