When creating a movie, special effects, sound effects and character development is very important in the success of the film. However one cannot compare these to the film’s musical accompaniment. Music touches the viewer’s emotion, enters the psyche, and makes the viewer feel that which cannot be seen. Music allows one to feel with the characters as they experience various dilemmas and ups and downs throughout the film.
In the year 1965 The Sound of Music, a cherished and popular film took the world over. The film became a classic in terms of music and the messages that it conveyed. The Sound of Music is based on a story of a widower who is raising a family on his own. He has hired many nannies to care for his children, but each have quit due to his children’s rowdiness. Maria finally comes into the picture and wins the children’s hearts, and eventually the heart of her Master. The film ends with the family’s flight from the Nazis, who have taken over Austria.
The musical content that characterizes the Sound of Music is what has made it a master piece and favorite for many decades to follow. Until today, people sing the songs and associate the world of music with this film. The films songs "Maria," "The Sound of Music," "My Favorite Things," "You Are Sixteen, Going On Seventeen," "Climb Every Mountain," "Do-Re-Mi," and "Edelweiss." are songs that have touched many hearts and have become classics. They are in essence a portrayal of love, beauty, and searching deeper into oneself to find life’s purpose.
“Music is the pen to the soul” (S.Z. Liadi). Music has the power to enter into the essence of a person, and reveal to them that life is beautiful and has much meaning.
