Young children in hospital require specialised holistic nursing care which utilises distinctive skills in communication and assessment. This essay examines the immediate nursing care required by Sarah a four year old Indigenous Australian child who has been admitted to hospital following a syncope incident at an Early Childhood Centre (ECC). It discusses the short term physical, psychological, and social nursing care that Sarah requires. It also examines the planning required for discharge including providing appropriate education and support for her extended family.

Sarah arrived at the hospital with a teacher from the ECC. Therefore it is assumed that the ECC would have a signed consent form allowing them to seek medical care for Sarah (Department of Education, Science and Training 1993). The ECC will also be able to provide documentation of any pertinent information regarding Sarah’s health requirements. This gives the medical team initial basic information such as allergies or current medications and allows them to conduct an initial baseline assessment (Staunton & Chiarella 2003). The nurse admitting Sarah will require consent from Sarah’s parent or legal guardian who in this case is her aunt. During an emergency situation, verbal consent may be gained via telephone. Health care providers can give emergency treatment to Sarah without this consent providing that they have made a reasonable attempt to contact the aunt (Curtis, Ramsden & Friendship 2007). Most care that is provided in hospital is covered by the initial consent for treatment; however, certain procedures will require the nurse to gain informed consent. Such procedures include major and minor surgery, and invasive procedures such as lumbar puncture or bone marrow aspiration, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and treatments which include research and photography (Kyle & Kyle 2007).
