As a recent poll by the Pew Research Center shows, 52% to 45%, adult Americans are in support of the legalization of Marijuana. This is the first time in more than forty years of polling that a majority has taken this position. As recently as a decade ago, only about one-third of American adults backed making marijuana legal.   Although it is illegal in most states, the use of marijuana is very common, “with forty-two percent of American adults reporting that they have used it” (10 Facts About Marijuana). Marijuana has become increasingly more popular as our culture evolves. According to a U.N. report on global drug use, cannabis was the world’s most widely produced, trafficked, and consumed drug in the world in 2010. Now more than ever, its popularity has risen to an all time high, leading to its widespread use and demand. (http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/WDR2012/WDR_2012_web_small.pdf) Yet, many people are against the use and the legalization of Marijuana, According to the nonpartisan RAND Corporation, legalization would greatly reduce the price of marijuana, thereby significantly increasing use, especially among teens. (http://www.rand.org/pubs/occasional_papers/OP315.html) This is thought of causing problems because the brain is developing until age 25, (http://www.nature.com/news/drop-in-iq-linked-to-heavy-teenage-cannabis-use-1.11278) and supposedly the use of Marijuana can decrease IQ, and increase the chance of contracting a mental illness. (http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736%2809%2961037-0/abstract) What is being overlooked in these studies is the fact that this increase is shown predominantly in people with already existing tendencies of psychosis and other personality disorders.
