It seems as if people have lost track of the value of politeness. People seem to have forgotten that manners are the foundation of a good society. It takes only seconds to say “please” and “thank you”, yet our society lacks using those words. Manners cost you so little and earn you so much. Saying “please” and “thank you” can teach a person that money isn’t everything, it can teach that when respect is given it is returned, and it shows that a person cares.
Money can most definitely get a person far in life but not in terms of making that individual more “likeable” so to say.   Too many people in our generation use money at their advantage to get what they want excusing politeness. This is exceptionally true in restaurant settings. Waitresses are getting ordered around by their costumers and not once do they ever hear a please or thank you. It is important to a waiter/waitress that they know their service is valued and appreciated. “Some people would stare at the menu and mumble drink orders-“bring me a water, extra lemon, no ice”-while refusing to meet me eyes”(Scotty, Christie). Perhaps because the world is centered on “gimmie gimmie gimmie” that we have forgotten such simple manners. If more “please” and “thank yous” were said maybe more friendships and relationships would form and the simple gesture could cause others to be more willing to do things again.
The use of “please” and “thank you” can also gain respect and the way people perceive you as a person. More than making others happy, using these two words is a reflection of your own attitude towards other people. Using please and thank you will automatically attract others to you because of the respect that is given. When respect is given, it is also returned. This could also be true in a job situation where multiple people are going for the same position; the differing factor may be an individual’s ability to display politeness.
