Feeling out of place is a feeling that is associated with the characters throughout the book Looking For Alibrandi. John Barton feels out of place because of the high expectations people have for him. Josie feels out of place because she doesn’t have her father around like her peers at school.
Nonna Katia feels out of place because she moved to Australia, from Italy a country where all her family and friends are to where she knew no-one,
Josie, the main character, felt extremely out of place at certain times in her life due to several reasons. Josie attends a school of rich and snobby girls so of course Josie attending the school on a scholarship made her feel like she cannot fit in and does not belong. She also feels that she is out of place at school because she is labeled a 'wog girl’. Josie feels that she is stuck in the middle of being a part of an Australian and Italian background because her grandparents were born in Italy but her mother was born in Australia as so was she, as she says, “My mother was born here so as far as the Italians were concerned we weren’t completely one of them. Yet because my grandparents were born in Italy we weren’t completely Australian.” (7) Josie does not have her father around and is also an illegitamte child who is not easily accepted, by not only the girls at school, but also the Italian community. To make feeling out of place even more of a nightmare, she is constantly reminded of these reasons by the evil "Poison Ivy."
Katia, Josie’s Nonna, has felt out of place throughout in some very life changing experiences for her. Katia moved from Italy, where everyone she knew and loved lived, with Francesco to Australia, a foreign country where she knew no one and did not speak the language.
