In the novel, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Piscine, Pi, Patel uses faith and science to survive. Pi is moving with his family to Canada due to bad government. Unfortunately, Pi’s ship sinks in the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently, he manages to escape on to a life boat where he is stranded with a Bengal tiger. Pi survives on the boat by using both science and faith. Yann Martel uses external conflicts, symbols, and internal conflicts to develop the theme that science and faith is important to survival.
  Yann Martel uses external conflicts to develop the theme that science and faith is important to survival by showing Pi’s scientific knowledge and how deeply he loves god. Firstly, Pi uses his knowledge of zoology to train Richard Parker into thinking He is the alpha-male on the boat so he will not attack him when Pi wants to go to other parts of the boat, “I couldn’t always be running from him. I needed a safe access to the locker and top of the tarpaulin.” (224). Also, Pi could not sleep many nights due to Richard Parker making noises to show his thirst. The problem was Pi could not let Richard Parker use a lot of his cans of fresh water or he would have to rely on rain water. So, Pi uses his scientific knowledge to use solar stills to purify water for Richard Parker, “The solar stills were the only other possible source of drinkable water” (207). Finally, a major external conflict is Pi’s surroundings and surviving in the middle of the ocean. Pi uses science to understand why he is getting boils on his body, “boils were a leprosy of the high seas, transmitted by the water that oaked me.” (213) This is how Yann Martel uses external conflicts to develop the theme that science and faith is important to survival.
