Below is an essay on "King Lear Act 1 Scene 1" from Anti Essays, your source for research papers, essays, and term paper examples.

In the passage we are first shown the true colours of Regan and Goneril and that they will do anything and use anyone to get what they want. We are shown their true feelings to Lear after faking their love to him so they could get their share of the land and that now he’s made the foolish decision of banishing Cordelia and Kent who truly care for him they realise he must be going mad and they slightly act concerned for how this will play out but that feeling only stays for a few seconds before they realise that if they don’t do anything it could do more harm to them then if they do nothing so they decide that even though they now have complete power over the kingdom they must scheme against Lear too reduce any authority that he may have left and that that they have to do it soon.
Also in the passage even though both sisters are evil I get the idea that Goneril is the leader between the both. This could be because she is older and automatically takes the role of being the leader or that she genuinely is more evil. The idea is shown as Goneril first starts the conversation and is the one to bring up that he’s going mad. In the conversation it almost seems as if Regan just goes along with what Goneril says as its when Goneril suggests that Lear is going mad Regan just expands on the idea with “ ‘Tis the infirmity of his age. Yet he hath ever but slenderly known himself” it shows that Regan also thinks he’s going mad but only because of age. Goneril is also the first one to want to undermine Lear and what little authority he has left in the kingdom and as a father and it’s shown when she suggests to plan something against him together knowing that if they go against him he will have no family left since he has banished Cordelia.
