Introduction

Within this essay, a critical review of the quote “it is always better to manage from the top-down” will be carried out in order to establish whether this is essentially the case. In order to do so, this essay will firstly identify what top-down management refers to and how it can positively and negatively affect an organisation, giving reference to an organisation which currently employs this approach. It will then go on to discuss the other method that can be used by an organisation, bottom-up management, and how the two methods differ from one another comparing and contrasting the two techniques to ultimately identify if top-down management is always better. To ensure an in depth analyse is conducted, two case studies similar two the organisation referenced will later be acknowledged to show how top-down management has affected these organisations   inevitably drawing conclusions and recommendations for the referenced organisation to be achieved.



The Organisation

The organisation that will be referenced throughout this essay is the Football Association (FA) who are currently the governing body for football in England. They were founded in 1863 and are responsible for the regulation of English football at all levels (Augustyn, 2011). Their main responsibilities are to; promote the development of the game; regulate the game via the 'laws of the game' and the 'rules of the association'; sanction all competitive matches played in England; administer the disciplinary system; and to organise the national competitions such as the FA cup (The FA, 2001a).
