There are many reasons for deciding to attend graduate school. The reasons vary from individual to individual. Students are faced with obstacles or challenges in their journey in graduate studies. In this paper I will discuss three challenges that I will be faced with as well as strategies to address these challenges.
The first challenge is writing papers. Writing papers has been a difficult experience for me. With no interest in writing papers, I tend to procrastinate and lose focus when writing. The last paper that I submitted was during my undergraduate studies 9 years ago. I have difficulty conveying my thoughts onto paper. This problem may lie in my lack of confidence in me. Part of my job when attending seminars is to write a short summary upon returning. I usually avoid this project.
Strategies used to help the challenge in writing papers will be perseverance and discipline. Journal keeping will help record thoughts or ideas that come to mind and may help to alleviate writers block. Persistence in writing the paper in advance, so colleagues can proofread the paper which will allow time for me to make corrections. Brainstorming or preparing an outline before writing will help to organize thoughts to apply to the paper. A fitting quote for me to remember is by Anne Lamotte, “Hope is a revolutionary patience; you wait and watch and work: you don’t give up (Stepanski, 2002).
The second challenge that I face is time management. Having a full time job can be a struggle when taking classes. Work consumes a great deal of my time. As an assistant nurse manager, I have to deal with certain problems that arise at work. Difficult patients, troubles with a family member or surgeon all take a lot of time to problem solve. All of this and having to take call is a huge responsibility as well. Personal interests such as: traveling, taking frequent trips, going to the beach, biking, and bowling are also included in time...
