Perhaps the most controversial decision made in recent years by the city officials and citizens of Austin, the capital of Texas and home to local music festivals South by Southwest and Austin City Limits, was the decision to branch out into the international side of entertainment by building the Circuit of the Americas racetrack and entertainment facility to host the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix and other events. While this choice was seen by many as anathema to the relatively quiet lifestyle and environment that the city has cultivated over the years, Formula 1 has proven itself time and again to be a lucrative fixture in dozens of cities since its inception in the early 20th century. Proponents and opponents of the track have argued, and will continue to argue, about the economic, social, and environmental impacts that the track will have over the years, but with barely a year of experience to draw from, the Circuit of the Americas has already proven that it was a very wise investment.
While Austin is the legislative hub of Texas and home to such institutions as the University of Texas and the State Capitol, of course, it has never been home to a professional sports team. Basketball, baseball, football, and hockey are known as the “Big Four”: the most popular and highest-grossing sports in the United States. These sports have franchises in almost every major city across the country, one exception being Austin. Formula 1 racing “would therefore allow the city to partly fill this gap, to increase its international visibility and, most of all, to compete with its urban neighbors, such as Houston, Dallas or San Antonio, by increasing its tourist appeal.” (Lefebvre & Roult, 2011) Even though the economic impact of having a professional sports franchise in a city does not guarantee an increase in revenue, it also does not guarantee a decrease.
