The Immigration Impasse
The article, "The immigration impasse: to move beyond it, conservatives must plot a course of compromise with one another,” written by Ramesh Ponnuru appeared in the National Review in 2010 and takes an in-depth look at the question of amnesty for illegal immigrants. In his article, Ponnuru aims to inform readers that amnesty as suggested by some conservatives is not the answer to illegal immigration. He points out, “But now is not the time for that policy,” (para. 19) to illustrate his point. Ponnuru continues with, “Enacting a law that puts amnesty into effect…would attract more illegal immigration,” (para. 18). With the use of pathos, ethos and logos, the writer provides an argument against amnesty while expanding on the issue of current illegal immigration policies.
Throughout Ponnuru’s article, he displays ethos to create his case on the topic of amnesty and the conservative groups who are arguing policies on illegal immigration. As a conservative pundit, he debates the stance of resuming deportation by stating, “Stepping up enforcement while deferring the question of amnesty is not a perfect solution to the dilemmas created by current immigration policy,” (para. 21). He continues disputing the arguments with, “Neither of these competing claims is compelling,” (para. 18). Ponnuru suggests, “Perhaps all three camps should reconsider their positions,” (para. 17). As Ponnuru (2014) noted in his article, deportation is not the answer to immigration nor is amnesty. This is the reason why he is suggesting political parties rethink their position on the subject.
Writer Ponnuru provides extensive information on the conservatives’ views of immigration in the article.
