Most of the world’s least developed countries face problems concerning hunger and disease.   Many people are not able to get adequate nutrition, which causes their immune systems to weaken.   This then makes them more susceptible to disease.   Africa is known for having these kinds of problems.   One of the countries in Africa that has had hunger issues for a while is Ethiopia.   They have been dealing with this food crisis for decades. In the article, “Ending the Cycle of Hunger in Ethiopia” the author, Brian Allanson points out four issues underlying Ethiopia’s recurring food crises. They are: poor governance (mostly in the past), the vulnerability or its farmers, problems with the production of food, and markets that don’t function.
Most food crises start with the issue of poor governance. These governments are responsible for all sectors of society and the people they serve. They have tried taking measures that could help reduce hunger among their citizens, such as liberalizing markets, decentralizing decision-making, and investing in agriculture, but it is just not enough. The second issue is the vulnerability of the country’s farmers.   Allanson wrote, “They are almost entirely dependent on the weather, and the country is prone to drought three to four years out of every ten.   Little investment has been made in irrigation or other systems to manage water supply only about 5 percent of potentially irrigable land are irrigated.”   This is a factor of the physical geography, which makes Ethiopia more prone to hunger.   These droughts cause serious delays in the farmers’ schedules.   To reduce the vulnerability of these farmers Allanson suggested that the government should use crop insurance, food-for-work programs, and other safety net measures.
