In this such a big world, gender roles have some interest features in different countries. In some countries, women have higher position than men in society, family or workplace. And in some other countries women don’t. I’m going to talk about the gender roles in some regions that I have learned about in this class.
I would like to begin with Russia and the Post-Soviet States. The gender role in Russia, or the Soviet Union, have quite a huge change in the past decades. Back to 1970s, ninety percent of able-bodied women were working full time, that made the Soviet Union become the highest rate of female paid employment in the world. However, at the meantime, most employed women need to work double day, they have to cook, shop for family, care for children, and do the housework after they finished their daytime work. Because the traditional attitude in the Soviet Union at that time women are the keepers of the home persisted. When time goes to 1980s, thanks to the market reforms and President Gorbachev’s outdated ideas, many women lost their jobs involuntarily. However, the average educated level of female labor force in Russia is now better than male labor force. Even though, as recently as 2005, the wages of women professional workers averaged 36 percent less than those of men. So there is still an unequal between women and men in Russia today.
When compare to women in Southwest Asia, women in Russia are in a much fair and high position. In Southwest Asia, the male has a higher position when compares to female. Males always make decision that females have to observe. In a Southwest Asia family, male family members are always the men who make decision for women as well as the family. Women in family only can follow the decisions. If they want to go to public area, a relative male needs to go with them in order to observe the female seclusion role in Southwest Asia.
