How Child Labor Has Changed

During the late 1700s and early 1800s child labor was formed due to the increase of factories being built. While this not only meant an increase of jobs being formed, but this was also the start of a revolutionary thing. Today there are strict laws on the age at which children can now work, how long, and how much they get paid. While child labor still exists in the United States today it is much less common than it was all those years ago.

In the past there were no laws against children working in hazardous conditions such as factories. The reason why employers would hire children was being they were small enough to fit in places most adults can’t, and also because it was cheaper to hire a child. Now though in the United States people who violate these laws would risk serious consequences. There are few jobs in which a minor under the age of 14 can get. The hours in which the individual can work also depends on whether the person is attending school or not.

The Fair Labor Standards Act is a law in the United States in which most work places abide by. This law is what allows workers to have minimum wage. It also allows for workers to get paid more if they work overtime. It is this law that many are happy that it exists because it helps the workers to get paid accordingly.

To conclude this, the conditions in which a child can get a job has drastically changed over the years. Today we are much more educated about these type of things and are working hard so that the past doesn’t repeat itself. Now in the United States most teenages don’t get their first job until their 16 and only work part-time and are getting a minimum wage. That is a huge difference to how things were during the Industrial Revolution.
