Global Positioning systems, also known as (A.K.A) GPS, are more widely used in many aspects of commercial and civilian life. For example, GPS is used by public transportation and delivery companies to track their vehicles, by people operating video map displays on their dashboards and by emergency, fire and police personnel. This paper will explore some of the ways GPS is being used in law enforcement. Innovations in technology now permit officers to dedicate more of their time, money and resources to solving more crimes faster. Nevertheless, they can still get the complete information they need without using time-consuming investigative means or tedious surveillance tactics of old.

Across the country, more police departments are utilizing GPS equipment as a part of their crime deterrence and crime fighting approaches. Law Enforcement agencies are starting to discover the advantages of using GPS in order to optimize their basic role in protecting the citizens within the country, county and cities in which they operate.   In the past, officers would have the monotonous job of following crooks on foot for days or even months at a time. GPS tracking technology; however, can track a criminal’s movements remotely in near real-time from essentially anywhere through an Internet-enabled computer or electronic device such as a smartphone or tablet. With its ability to precisely locate individuals and vehicles, this technology is providing an array of new law enforcement solutions. GPS technology is proving to be quite useful in several cases that are legal in nature.   The most basic use of GPS in law enforcement involves tracking individuals and vehicles.
