A Class Divided
A third grade teacher does an experiment with discrimination with her class. Jane Elliot separates the class to two groups brown eyes and blue eyes. The first day of the two-day experiment the blue-eyed children are privileged, and the brown-eyed children have to wear collars. The second day the brown-eyed children are the privileged ones, and the blue-eyed children need to wear collars. The privileged children would get to drink from the fountain; seconds during lunch, extra time during recess and got to se the playground equipment. While the non-privileged group could not use the playground, got picked on and could not interact with the privileged group. I was surprised that these children would turn on each other so quickly. They were friend’s one day and the next were enemies. The way they improved in the card game they played when they were privileged as opposed to the day they weren’t was shocking. To see how just because they were told they were less because they were brown/blue eyed made them perform worse was very disturbing, and how the collars made them less focused was also disturbing.   I think Jane actions were very appropriate for the age group. The younger the get that discrimination is wrong installed in their brains the better. I think that the younger they understand why its wrong the less likely they will do it.
In the workshop experiment I think that certain people got a lot more out of it than the others did. In the classroom one I think all the children got a lot out of it. In the workshop not all the people participated, while in the classroom everyone was affected. Every child got less recess time or something, while some of the people in the workshop didn’t even say a word the whole time. I would say that the classroom experiment was more effective. I think most definitely in some places it is needed. It could not hurt to have these in any workplace. I think it would help, even in places that are extremely diverse. Some...
