CONFIDENT BODY LANGUAGE/COMMUNICATION -
Shows you are more approachable and they have more confidence
In you. This will put them at ease, helping them to open up and trust
you more. Always speak clearly and precisely and don’t be hesitant as this can lead to people thinking you are not confident in your work role and what you are discussing with them. Use an appropriate tone of voice for the situation. When communicating on the telephone you must be precise and speak clearly, and remember confidentiality at all times. Use simple terminology when relaying back information to a patient or some staff because they will not understand what you are saying. Think about information that you are about to convey so that the patient is provided with accurate and clear information.
FACIAL EXPRESSIONS –
A welcoming smile, good eye contact, this shows that you are listening and don’t give the impression you are bored for example looking at something else and letting your attention be distracted. Don’t cross your arms as this can be seen as defensive/negative body language.
Punctuality is very important because it can disrupt the running on the department that you are working on. Always ask the patients permission before calling them by their forename because some older patients prefer to be called Mr or Mrs....
