Ethical issues always tend to arise most in Health Care field especially dealing with patient privacy. Patient privacy is a very tender subject in the health field and should be protected at all times. Many regulations have been made to protect patients and their information. Some of these regulations are: HIPAA and the Patient Privacy Act. However with these regulations and laws made, patient’s information is not always protected. Most patient information is distributed by word of mouth or through the misuse of the Electronic Medical Records. As an ethical issue, most health care providers violate the laws and illegally distribute the patient’s information. Most claim they did not know they were violating the patient’s right even by just talking about the patient and medical condition. In this newspaper article, a case arises as thousands of patient’s information including: patient names, diagnosis codes, account numbers, admission and discharges dates, and billing charges were published on the internet for everyone to see.
In the New York Times on September 8, 2011 an article was printed in the newspaper explaining about a privacy breach of 20,000 patients at the Stanford Hospital information was posted on the internet. The information was on the internet for about a year before being discovered by a patient and reported. “ The article “Patient Data Posted Online in Major Breach of Privacy” explains how the information was placed in the wrong hands of a billing contractor’s marketing agent who sent an electronic spreadsheet to a job prospect as part of a skills test for a job offering” (Sack, 2011, September 08). The unknowing job applicant then converted the information into a bar graph like asked to do so, then posted the information on the website called studentoffortune.com.
